The only female jockey to win the Melbourne Cup has been given a one-month ban for taking a banned substance.

Michelle Payne took weight suppressant Phentermine after returning from a life-threatening fall, in which she split her pancreas.

But the substance fell foul of the rules, and she tested positive at the Swan Hill Cup meeting on 11 June.

She was banned from racing until 21 July following an inquiry.

The 31-year-old, who pleaded guilty to taking Phentermine, banned under the rules of Australian racing, said she took “full responsibility”.

“The onus is 100% with me as a rider to know what I am taking and the rules around it regardless of whether it has been prescribed to me or not,” she said in a statement following Thursday’s inquiry.

“Going forward, I’m very much looking forward to finding a solution in working with my surgeon.”
